Is There a Role for Probiotics in Oral Health? An Evidence-Based Discussion

It is generally accepted that the oral health of an individual is affected by resident bacteria as well as the person’s overall systemic health, age, lifestyle, and nutritional status. It is estimated that a diverse population of ~700-1000 bacterial species reside in the oral cavity. The emergence of drug resistance coupled with the systemic side effects of commonly prescribed antimicrobials have made it imperative to try and enhance the use of living therapeutics such as probiotics.  The impact of probiotics on human health has been substantiated for many years as they have been advocated for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of diseases. Probiotics consist of beneficial micro-organisms which stimulate beneficial health-promoting flora while suppressing the pathogenic flora. In recent years, the application of probiotics for oral health has attracted much attention. There is an increasing body of research which suggests that probiotics could be useful in the prevention and treatment of oral problems and infections such as halitosis, dental caries, and periodontal disease. This lecture will be provide an up-to-date evidence-based discussion for the oral healthcare professional on the use of probiotics and their role in dentistry.

Dr. Vinay Bhide is a board-certified periodontist who provides the full scope of surgical periodontal and dental implant therapy. Dr. Bhide has a special interest in esthetic and reconstructive periodontics. Dr. Bhide earned his DDS from the University of Toronto in 2001, and subsequently completed a one-year internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.  He completed his Master of Science and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Toronto in 2005.  Dr. Bhide is an Examiner and Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.  In addition to private practice, Dr. Bhide is a clinical instructor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Toronto where he is involved in didactic and clinical teaching of periodontics at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at UPenn. Dr. Bhide has lectured nationally and internationally and published on various topics related to periodontics and implantology.
